Actually I don't think it's ugly .... weeeell, maybe a tad, but really I think it's pretty cool. It was declared in Travel and Leisure Magazine as one of the world's ugliest buildings .... I don't think I'd go that far, but hey, you're entitled to your opinion : ) It is the Minsk Library. Well, at the end of the summer/beginning of fall Ales and I took a trip to see it, but we couldn't really go in because he forgot his "library card" and neither of us had our passports, which you need for some strange reason. Anyway, luckily I did get some semi-good pictures of the outside and also some sky view pictures of Minsk - which I will show you in the next post. For now, the library: |

The library opened in June of 2006 and contains the third largest collection of Russian books.

It includes an observation deck on the 23rd floor, a 500 seat conference hall, a restaurant, a gym, a cryo sauna, and a museum, along with many exhibitions.

Every day this building is visited by 2,200 people. "That the man of God may be perfect furnished to every good work" - great verse. I am still in shock that they have it there, but a good shock.

The library is also the only structure in Minsk with a public observation deck.

This is a statue of Francis Scaryna in front of the library. He was like the Gutenberg of Belarus. He printed the Bible in 1517 in his native tongue - Belorussian - less than a hundred years after Gutenberg printed the first Bible.

This is part of the Fransis Skaryna statue. Love this picture - the sunshine was perfect for this (although not for my other pictures) and somehow the sun was at just the right direction that I got this beautiful beam in my photo. So, do you think this building qualifies for the "world's ugliest building" title? What do you think of it? Love, Em

There are much worse buildings in the area - check out the Palace of Soviets iin Kalingrad, Russia - a total abortion.
I'm not sure about THE ugliest...but I think it's pretty ugly. It kind of looks like what would happen if someone were to look at what their kids were building out of Lego and decided to make a building that looked like it.
I think the building is pretty cool. I would love to see the inside. I wonder what made them put the Bible verse on it. Did you notice the Alpha and the Omega symbol? Is this a reference to Christ? By the way, you're the bestest daughter!
