Baby Sophia

Published in

Baby Sophia was born in the wee morning hours on December 10th. And the very next day Ales and I got to see her and I got to snap some great newborn shots of her sweet pink face.

Sadly I didn't have my new lens at that point, so I'm planning on taking more, even better photos. So we'll call these the "First Few Days" with the "First Month" to come ; )

"Ooooohhh...."

*yawn*

 *sigh*

*Do not disturb*

*Just five more minutes mom!*

 *Oh, it's you.*

*Anybody else wanna' check out my yawn?*

*daddy's arms*

"Not the End. Just the beginning*

Baby Sophia, one day old

Love, Em

Hey, I think that's exactly the lens that I have! (Only it's a little broken, I have to hold down this little thing on the side with one finger, and it only works in manual focus on my Nikon d40x, but I don't mind, that's my favorite lens to shoot for now.) I have 3 macro filters for it, and you're welcome to borrow them when you want, I used them to photograph dew drops (some of those pictures are on my "portfolio" site).
As for the vignette, I myself prefer the black one too, it's just it creates a more dramatic look than I would create with a baby. I do very much like a more subtle one on the last photo.

Lana, I don't think your lens is broken, at least not on the focusing part, it's just that the D40 models are lacking a mechinism to autofocus with this lens. If you ever upgrade your body the autofocus should work then. I have a D40 and mine doesn't focus either, but honestly when I'm working in macro I like more control anyway. It would be very useful sometimes when working with portraits.

Anyway, I would love, love to try out your filters, we have to go shooting together when I get back. Thanks!

Hey Lana and Lulu,

Thank you for you wonderful compliments - I love having feedback on what I do : ) It always helps to see what other people think!

First, the new lens I got is a 50mm Nikor 1.8f and I absolutely love it! I was planning on writing more about it later, but now you know. It is a fairly inexpensive lens, especially for the 1.8 f-stop. Plus I love shooting macro, so it was a great choice I think. If you want to see examples of what it does you can check out the Christmas baking post.

Sadly I don't have any filter yet, and I also prefer to do most of that post-production so I can mess around more and see what I like (try before you buy:)), rather than being stuck with only one option. With the vignettes, I should play with the white ones more, but overall I prefer black as it draws the eye to the subject more ...  : ))

Ooooh, she is ADORABLE! My favourite pictures have to be the first and fifth! And what a head of hair she has on her, despite being so young! Absolutely adorable!

On a more technical note - did you use a filter for that soft pinkish effect in the last picture? Or was it post-production?

Great stuff! And like Lana asked - what lens did you get?

Sweet pictures, Emily!
(I do wonder about the dark vignette on some of them, perhaps a light or white vignette would serve better such a lovely topic? :)
What lens did you get?
